Weaning

The weaning process starts after the 6th month. Besides the breast or bottle milk, the baby is introduced to a variety of food items. The food is light and bland and offered usually in a mashed or pureed form so that the baby is not only able to swallow it but is also able to digest it easily. Weaning helps the baby start transitioning into the grown-ups’ world, develop a stronger and diverse taste palate. Weaning should neither be started too early or too late, as in both cases, it causes developmental problems. Some babies are very eager towards semi-solid food, while others are unwilling to let go of their mothers’ breasts or the bottle. Although milk continues to stay a major part of the baby’s diet, some of them show their aversion to weaning and other types of food. A lot of patience and tact is required by the parents to successfully wean their babies off milk.
